My name is Zubiya and a few weeks ago at a restaurant I ordered pasta but received a rice dish instead, and when I pointed this out the waiter told me sharply that I had ordered the rice. I was taken aback by his tone but I stayed calm and said clearly, "I am quite sure I ordered the pasta. Could we check the order slip please?" He went away and came back a minute later looking embarrassed, admitting there had been a kitchen mistake and bringing the correct dish. When someone speaks rudely in English it can be tempting to become aggressive or to say nothing, but neither works — staying calm and asking a clear specific question is always the most effective approach. A clear question is much harder to dismiss than an emotional complaint, and it forces the other person to deal with the actual problem.
