My name is Aftab and because I travel occasionally for work and have eaten at restaurants in several countries I have had to learn about tipping culture and I want to share what I have learned.
In many Western countries a tip of ten to fifteen percent of the total bill is considered standard when the service has been good and although it is technically voluntary the staff notice and feel it when you do not tip.
When the waiter brings the bill you can say "Could you add ten percent to the total please?" or if paying cash simply leave the extra amount on the table.
If the service was exceptional you might say "Please keep the change" when handing over cash, which is a simple and warm way to show appreciation.
Understanding tipping culture is part of understanding the restaurant culture of a country and this kind of cultural knowledge is just as important as knowing how to order the food correctly.
میرا نام آفتاب ہے اور چونکہ میں کبھی کبھی کام کے لیے سفر کرتا ہوں اور کئی ممالک میں کھانا کھایا ہے اس لیے ٹِپنگ کلچر سیکھنا پڑا اور میں جو سیکھا وہ شیئر کرنا چاہتا ہوں۔
بہت سے مغربی ممالک میں اچھی سروس پر کل بل کا دس سے پندرہ فیصد ٹِپ معیاری سمجھا جاتا ہے اور اگرچہ تکنیکی طور پر اختیاری ہے لیکن نہ دینے پر عملہ نوٹ کرتا اور محسوس کرتا ہے۔
جب ویٹر بل لائے تو کہہ سکتے ہیں "Could you add ten percent to the total please?" یا نقد ادائیگی پر صرف میز پر اضافی رقم چھوڑ دیں۔
اگر سروس غیر معمولی اچھی تھی تو نقد دیتے وقت کہہ سکتے ہیں "Please keep the change" جو تعریف ظاہر کرنے کا ایک آسان اور گرمجوش طریقہ ہے۔
