My name is Rukhsar and I want to tell you about the time I brought a German colleague to a traditional Pakistani restaurant for the first time, which meant I had to explain the entire menu in English.
I explained that karahi is a dish cooked in a deep rounded pan with tomatoes and spices, that biryani is fragrant rice cooked with meat and whole spices, and that naan is soft flatbread baked in a clay oven.
She was curious about the spice level so I advised her to start with a mild chicken handi and she agreed, while I ordered a beef karahi for myself.
She loved the handi, the bread and the yogurt on the side, and by the end of the evening she said she wanted to come back and try the biryani next time.
Taking someone to a food experience they have never had before is one of the best ways to share your culture and speaking English well enough to explain it makes you the perfect bridge between two worlds.
