My name is Kashif and last Tuesday I phoned a restaurant to order takeaway for my unwell mother, which meant I had to use telephone English — a skill that is harder than face-to-face conversation.
The person who answered spoke very quickly and I had to ask them to slow down twice before I could understand the address confirmation process.
I gave our address slowly and clearly, spelling the street name letter by letter when the person seemed confused, and then confirmed the full order: chicken karahi, naan, water and salad.
Telephone English is harder because you cannot use hand gestures or read facial expressions and must rely entirely on the clarity of your words.
Speaking slowly, repeating back what you heard and asking the other person to repeat when needed are the most useful strategies for phone conversations in English.
