My name is Jamal and last weekend my friend invited me to a proper sit-down restaurant for dinner where there were printed menus, proper tablecloths and a waiter who spoke mostly in English.
I noticed the menu had four sections: starters, main course, desserts and drinks, and I read each dish carefully even when I did not recognise the name.
I saw grilled fish with seasonal vegetables and herb sauce, recognised most of those words, and decided to order it.
When the waiter came I said clearly, "I would like the grilled fish, please," and he asked whether I wanted it medium or well done.
I paused for a second because I had never been asked that before, then said calmly, "Well done, please."
The fish arrived after twenty minutes, cooked exactly right, with fresh vegetables and a light sauce, and I ate slowly and paid attention to every flavour.
When the bill came I paid my share without confusion because I had already calculated it in my head while ordering.
On the way home my friend asked how it felt to speak English in a real situation and I said honestly that it felt more natural than I had expected.
The secret, I think, is to speak slowly and clearly and not worry about being perfect, because the goal is to communicate not to impress.
