My name is Samia and earlier this year my husband and I visited a Japanese restaurant for the first time where I had never eaten sushi before and did not recognise most of the items on the menu.
I asked the waiter to explain the basics and he patiently told me that sashimi is sliced raw fish without rice, nigiri is a small mound of rice with fish on top and a roll is rice and filling wrapped in seaweed.
He recommended that first-time visitors start with cooked options or vegetable rolls rather than raw fish, so I ordered a vegetable roll, a prawn tempura roll and a bowl of miso soup.
The food arrived beautifully presented on a wooden board and at the end I tried one piece of my husband's salmon nigiri and found it surprisingly pleasant.
Trying a cuisine you have never experienced before is one of the most interesting things you can do at a restaurant and asking the waiter to explain the menu is always the right first step.
