My name is Sundus and one of my clearest memories from every new school year is the excitement of getting a new school bag and fresh stationery in August before school began.
My mother would take me to the market and we would buy a new bag pencil case pens in two colours a geometry box a ruler and a sharpener better than the broken one I had been using.
The new bag had that particular smell of new fabric and the zip was stiff at first and the notebook pages were clean and white without a single mark.
By week three the notebooks had their first crossed-out mistakes and the bag had crumbs and a broken pencil at the bottom and the sharpener had already been lost.
Every new school year with its new bag and clean notebooks was a quiet personal promise that this year I would do better.
