My name is Adyan and my grandfather passed away two years ago after living with us for fifteen years. He woke up before everyone, made tea, walked in the garden and told me stories at night when I could not sleep. When he passed away there was a quiet in the house that felt wrong — not just sound but a shape had changed. His chair was empty, his slippers were still by the door and his cup was on the shelf. Missing someone who has passed away is different from missing someone alive — there is only memory. I learned to talk to his memory — I tell him things sometimes as if he can hear. Grief is not a feeling that ends — it changes shape from very heavy to lighter but never fully goes. Missing someone you loved means they were worth loving.
