My name is Babar and I grew up in a neighbourhood where load-shedding happened every evening for two to four hours so studying by candlelight was a regular part of my school life. Candlelight is softer and dimmer than electric light and it flickers — reading by it strains the eyes more and writing requires being very close to the flame. But candlelight has one quality electric light does not — it creates a particular silence around the task with no screens and no sounds from electronics. Some of my clearest studying memories are from candlelight sessions when I finished chapters I had been putting off and wrote paragraphs that came out well. The absence of something useful can sometimes produce a different kind of usefulness.
