Yesterday I told you about my grandfather Dada Jaan. Today I want to tell you about my grandmother. We call her Dadi Amma. She also lives in the village near Gujranwala. She is seventy years old. She is short and a little round, with soft white hair and small kind eyes. Dadi Amma cannot read or write. But she knows things that no book can teach. She knows which plant cures a headache. She knows when the weather will change just by looking at the sky. She knows when someone in the family is sad, even before they say a single word. When Dada Jaan visits us, Dadi Amma always comes with him. The first thing she does when she arrives is go to the kitchen. She makes food for us with her own hands. She says, food made with love tastes different. And she is right. Her halwa is the best thing I have ever eaten. At night, when we were small, she used to tell us old stories before we slept. Hira still asks her for stories whenever she visits. Dadi Amma always says yes. She never says she is tired. I think she is one of the strongest people I know.
کل میں نے آپ کو اپنے دادا جان کے بارے میں بتایا تھا۔ آج میں آپ کو اپنی دادی اماں کے بارے میں بتانا چاہتا ہوں۔ ہم انہیں دادی اماں کہتے ہیں۔ وہ بھی گوجرانوالہ کے قریب گاؤں میں رہتی ہیں۔ ان کی عمر ستر سال ہے۔ وہ چھوٹے قد کی اور تھوڑی گول ہیں، ان کے نرم سفید بال ہیں اور چھوٹی مہربان آنکھیں ہیں۔ دادی اماں پڑھنا لکھنا نہیں جانتیں۔ لیکن وہ ایسی چیزیں جانتی ہیں جو کوئی کتاب نہیں سکھا سکتی۔ وہ جانتی ہیں کہ کون سا پودا سر درد ٹھیک کرتا ہے۔ وہ آسمان کو دیکھ کر بتا سکتی ہیں کہ موسم کب بدلے گا۔ وہ جانتی ہیں کہ خاندان میں کوئی اداس ہے، حتیٰ کہ اس سے پہلے کہ وہ ایک لفظ بھی بولے۔ جب دادا جان ہمارے پاس آتے ہیں تو دادی اماں ہمیشہ ان کے ساتھ آتی ہیں۔ پہنچتے ہی سب سے پہلے وہ باورچی خانے میں جاتی ہیں۔ وہ اپنے ہاتھوں سے ہمارے لیے کھانا بناتی ہیں۔ وہ کہتی ہیں، محبت سے بنا کھانا مختلف ذائقہ رکھتا ہے۔ اور وہ سچ کہتی ہیں۔ ان کا حلوہ سب سے بہترین چیز ہے جو میں نے کبھی کھائی ہے۔ رات کو، جب ہم چھوٹے تھے، وہ سونے سے پہلے ہمیں پرانی کہانیاں سنایا کرتی تھیں۔ حرا اب بھی جب بھی وہ آتی ہیں تو کہانیاں مانگتی ہے۔ دادی اماں ہمیشہ ہاں کہتی ہیں۔ وہ کبھی نہیں کہتیں کہ وہ تھکی ہوئی ہیں۔ میرے خیال میں وہ میری جانی پہچانی سب سے مضبوط لوگوں میں سے ایک ہیں۔
