Yesterday I told you about my student life. Today I want to tell you about my grandfather. We call him Dada Jaan. He is seventy-five years old. He does not live with us in Lahore. He lives in our village near Gujranwala. But he visits us every few months, and those are some of the best days of our lives. Dada Jaan is tall, thin, and has a long white beard. He walks slowly with a wooden stick. But his mind is very sharp. He remembers everything. He knows the name of every person in our family, their birthdays, and even their small problems. When he comes to Lahore, the whole house changes. My mother cooks his favourite food. My father sits with him for hours and talks quietly. Usman and I sit near him and listen to his old stories. He tells us about the village, about hard times, and about how our family started from nothing. His favourite thing to say is, a man who works hard never stays poor. I have heard this sentence many times. But every time I hear it, it still feels new.
