My name is Usman. I am forty two years old and I have diabetes. Having diabetes means I have to be very careful about what I eat every day. My wife has learned to cook special meals that are healthy for me. She has replaced white rice with brown rice and white bread with whole wheat bread. I have learned to love foods I used to ignore like bitter gourd, spinach and lentils. I eat small meals every three to four hours instead of three big meals. My biggest struggle is avoiding sweets especially on Eid when everyone is eating mithai. My wife makes sugar free kheer for me on special occasions and it tastes surprisingly good. Managing food with diabetes has taught me that what you eat is directly connected to how you feel. I drink plenty of water and avoid cold drinks completely. I wish I had started eating healthily much earlier in my life.
