My name is Rimah and in class nine I had to choose my optional subjects for the board exam — the first real decision in my school life with real consequences.
I spent two weeks making lists asking questions and talking to class ten students who had taken both science and arts.
What the students who were doing well had in common was that they had chosen subjects they were willing to work hard at even when it was difficult.
I chose science and chemistry remained hard but I stayed with it and by class ten I was managing it.
The lesson was not that I chose correctly — it was that once you choose you must commit because a mediocre effort in your preferred subjects will not outperform a genuine effort in difficult ones.

सबक यह नहीं कि सही चुना — यह है कि एक बार चुनो तो प्रतिबद्ध हो जाओ क्योंकि पसंदीदा विषयों में साधारण प्रयास मुश्किल विषयों में असली प्रयास से बेहतर नहीं हो सकता।
