My name is Haroon and in class nine I was called to the principal office for the first time — I did not know why and assumed it was trouble. I sat outside on the bench everyone called the bench of doom beside three boys who already looked miserable and one asked what did you do. The principal had called me to congratulate me for scoring the highest marks in the district spelling competition and discuss sending me to the next level. When he stood up and shook my hand the look on my face must have been strange because he laughed and said you look like you were expecting something very different. I had felt guilty and frightened for fifteen minutes for no reason — how we feel in a situation depends almost entirely on what we expect from it.
