My name is Zulaikha and I remember the very last day of school after class ten board exams when we walked out of the gate knowing we would never return as students.
I arrived early and walked the corridors that smelled of chalk dust and floor polish then sat alone in our classroom looking at the desk I had used all year.
Someone had carved their initials into the corner of the desk years before I sat there — I had seen them thousands of times but only that day thought about the person who made them.
When I walked out through the school gate I turned and looked back once — the building looked the same but everything had changed for me.
School is a strange place — while you are inside you sometimes wish you were elsewhere and the moment you are finally outside forever you understand what it was holding.

जल्दी आई और चाक की धूल और फर्श पालिश की खुशबू वाले गलियारों में चली फिर अकेले कक्षा में बैठकर अपनी मेज़ देखी।
किसी ने सालों पहले मेज़ के कोने में अपने अक्षर खोदे थे — हज़ारों बार देखे पर उस दिन पहली बार उस व्यक्ति के बारे में सोचा।
स्कूल गेट से निकलते वक्त एक बार पीछे मुड़कर देखा — इमारत वैसी ही लगी पर मेरे लिए सब बदल गया था।
स्कूल अजीब जगह है — अंदर रहते कभी-कभी और कहीं चाहते हैं और जब हमेशा के लिए बाहर होते हैं तो समझते हैं यह क्या थामे था।
