My name is Sumbul and in class seven I was selected to represent my school in a district level speech competition.
I had two weeks to prepare a three minute speech and the first time I practised in front of the mirror my voice came out thin and shaky.
My mother listened every night and told me to slow down deliberately when nervous because nervous speakers always rush.
On the day I walked to the front slowed down deliberately and spoke all three minutes without forgetting a word.
I did not win but came second and more importantly discovered that I could stand before strangers and speak clearly.
میرا نام سمبل ہے اور ساتویں جماعت میں مجھے ضلعی سطح کے تقریری مقابلے میں اسکول کی نمائندگی کے لیے چنا گیا۔
تین منٹ کی تقریر کے لیے دو ہفتے ملے اور پہلی بار آئینے کے سامنے مشق کی تو آواز باریک اور کانپنے والی نکلی۔
والدہ نے ہر رات سنا اور کہا گھبراہٹ میں جان بوجھ کر آہستہ بولو کیونکہ گھبراہٹ میں بولنے والے ہمیشہ جلدی کرتے ہیں۔
اس دن آگے گئی، جان بوجھ کر آہستہ بولی اور تین منٹ مکمل کیے بغیر کوئی لفظ بھولے۔
جیتی نہیں لیکن دوسرا نمبر آیا اور اہم بات یہ کہ جانا کہ اجنبیوں کے سامنے کھڑی ہو کر واضح بول سکتی ہوں۔
मेरा नाम सुंबुल है और सातवीं में ज़िला स्तरीय भाषण प्रतियोगिता में स्कूल का प्रतिनिधित्व करने के लिए चुनी गई।
तीन मिनट के भाषण के लिए दो हफ्ते मिले और पहली बार दर्पण के सामने अभ्यास किया तो आवाज़ पतली और काँपती निकली।
माँ ने हर रात सुना और कहा घबराहट में जानबूझकर धीरे बोलो क्योंकि घबराए हुए वक्ता हमेशा जल्दी करते हैं।
उस दिन आगे गई, जानबूझकर धीरे बोली और तीन मिनट पूरे किए बिना कोई शब्द भूले।
जीती नहीं पर दूसरा स्थान मिला और ज़रूरी यह जाना कि अजनबियों के सामने खड़े होकर साफ बोल सकती हूँ।
