Yesterday I told you about being hardworking. Today I want to tell you about being polite. Politeness was not something I was taught from a book or a worksheet. It was shown to me through the small daily habits of the people I grew up around. My mother never interrupted anyone while they were speaking, even when she disagreed. My grandfather Dada Jaan always greeted the youngest person in the room with the same warmth he gave the oldest. These small acts taught me that politeness is not a performance put on for important people. It is a way of treating everyone, at all times, as if they deserve respect. At university, I noticed something interesting. The students my teachers remembered most kindly were rarely the smartest or the loudest. They were often the ones who said please, who listened before speaking, and who thanked their professors even after a difficult lecture. I try to carry this same habit into my English practice. When I speak to someone in English and I do not understand, I say, I am sorry, could you please say that again, instead of going silent or pretending I understood.
