My name is Bismah.
I live with my family in a high rise apartment building in Karachi on the twelfth floor.
Every morning I stand at the window and the view stretches all the way to the sea on clear days.
At night the city lights look like scattered stars from our window.
The lift in our building is old and sometimes it breaks down.
The balcony is my favourite place and on windy evenings the breeze up here is much stronger than on the ground.
I tie my hair back and stand there feeling like I am flying.
My mother keeps a small container garden on the balcony with tomatoes and mint.
Sometimes pigeons land on the balcony railing and my little brother chases them away.
At first I missed having a garden and a ground level door but now I could not imagine living anywhere else.
The sky feels closer up here.
I feel like I can see the whole world from my window.

میں کراچی میں ایک اونچی اپارٹمنٹ عمارت میں اپنے خاندان کے ساتھ بارہویں منزل پر رہتی ہوں۔
ہر صبح میں کھڑکی پر کھڑی ہوتی ہوں اور صاف دنوں میں نظارہ سمندر تک پھیلا ہوا ہوتا ہے۔
رات کو ہماری کھڑکی سے شہر کی روشنیاں بکھرے ستاروں جیسی لگتی ہیں۔
ہماری عمارت کی لفٹ پرانی ہے اور کبھی کبھی خراب ہو جاتی ہے۔
بالکنی میری پسندیدہ جگہ ہے اور ہوا دار شاموں کو یہاں اوپر ہوا زمین سے بہت تیز ہوتی ہے۔
میں اپنے بال پیچھے باندھتی ہوں اور وہاں کھڑی ہوتی ہوں جیسے میں اڑ رہی ہوں۔
میری ماں بالکنی پر ٹماٹر اور پودینے کے ساتھ ایک چھوٹا کنٹینر باغ رکھتی ہے۔
کبھی کبھی کبوتر بالکنی کی ریلنگ پر بیٹھتے ہیں اور میرا چھوٹا بھائی انہیں اڑا دیتا ہے۔
شروع میں مجھے باغیچے اور زمینی سطح کے دروازے کی کمی محسوس ہوتی تھی لیکن اب میں کہیں اور رہنے کا تصور نہیں کر سکتی۔
یہاں اوپر آسمان قریب لگتا ہے۔
مجھے لگتا ہے کہ میں اپنی کھڑکی سے پوری دنیا دیکھ سکتی ہوں۔

मैं कराची में एक ऊँची अपार्टमेंट इमारत में अपने परिवार के साथ बारहवीं मंजिल पर रहती हूँ।
हर सुबह मैं खिड़की पर खड़ी होती हूँ और साफ दिनों में नज़ारा समुद्र तक फैला होता है।
रात को हमारी खिड़की से शहर की रोशनियाँ बिखरे तारों जैसी लगती हैं।
हमारी इमारत की लिफ्ट पुरानी है और कभी-कभी खराब हो जाती है।
बालकनी मेरी पसंदीदा जगह है और हवादार शाम को यहाँ ऊपर हवा ज़मीन से बहुत तेज़ होती है।
मैं अपने बाल पीछे बाँधती हूँ और वहाँ खड़ी होती हूँ जैसे मैं उड़ रही हूँ।
मेरी माँ बालकनी पर टमाटर और पुदीने के साथ एक छोटा कंटेनर बगीचा रखती हैं।
कभी-कभी कबूतर बालकनी की रेलिंग पर बैठते हैं और मेरा छोटा भाई उन्हें उड़ा देता है।
शुरू में मुझे बगीचे और ज़मीनी स्तर के दरवाज़े की कमी महसूस होती थी लेकिन अब मैं कहीं और रहने की कल्पना नहीं कर सकती।
यहाँ ऊपर आसमान करीब लगता है।
मुझे लगता है कि मैं अपनी खिड़की से पूरी दुनिया देख सकती हूँ।
